A Support Guide for the Doctoral Student & Significant Others:
The Collective Journey
Students: Managing Expectations
The life of a doctoral student intersects with many life roles (being a partner, parent, caretaker, staff member, volunteer, and friend), so managing expectations of school and other responsibilities is vital to surviving the program.
Knowing Your Priorities Ahead of Time
Identify what is truly significant in your life and make a commitment to prioritize those people and things. This will help you stay focused and motivated towards achieving your goal.
Compromising & Compartmentalizing
It's important to be present when you're at school or at home and vice versa. Once you're done for the day, leave it behind, and only focus on what’s in front of you. Remember to take breaks from your routine and find time to rest and recharge. Doing something outside of your usual routine can be very helpful. And when things don't go perfectly, learn to let it go. If you follow these tips, you will feel more refreshed and energized to tackle your schoolwork with a better focus.
Experiencing Feelings of Frustration
When struggling – remember why you are doing this. Perhaps it is because there's more opportunities, such as landing a better job, receiving an increase in income, or because ultimately you are working towards a better future for yourself and your family. Remember your priorities.
